Solder mask, also known as solder resist, effectively protects the copper traces on a PCB from oxidation, contamination, and mechanical damage. It ensures that solder only flows to the exposed pads.
Initially, most circuit boards used green solder mask, which is why it is commonly referred to as "green oil." However, solder mask comes in various colors, such as green, blue, black, white, yellow, and red. The type of color you use depends on different factors.
